MADIKERI: Madikeri district and the surrounding areas seem to be under threat as rains continue to lash the region on Monday, causing a landslide in the slope areas of Madikeri.The civic officials and municipal councillors are on a high alert round the clock. Speaking to Express, Madikeri City Municipal Council (CMC) president H M Nandakumar said three houses were found in a dilapidated condition on Saturday and Sunday, and all the residents in the houses were moved to safer places. The council supplied ration goods to them. He said that the CMC was keeping a close watch on Mangaladevinagar, Chamundeshwarinagar and Indiranagar areas, which were badly affected in the rains. Nandakumar said they would appeal to the district administration and the people’s representatives to help them move the poor from rain-affected areas and give alternative lands to them.Local Holiday ExtendedSchools and colleges announced local holiday for the second day on Tuesday, as the rains showed no signs of relenting in the district.The district received average rainfall of 33.64 mm and on the same day last year it was 18.33 mm. So far, the district has received a total rainfall of 1,892.27 mm, and last year it was 1,399.84 mm. Madikeri recorded rainfall of 60.75 mm this year. The total rainfall there till now is 2,599.78 mm and last year it was 1,960.86 mm. In Virajpet, the rainfall reported was 11.51 mm and last year it was 17 mm. The total rainfall received there is 1,829.06 mm as against 1,185.20 mm in the corresponding period last year.Somwarpet taluk received a rainfall of 29.03 mm and last year it had received 15.95 mm. The total rainfall in the taluk till now is 1,247.97 mm and last year it was 1,053.48 mm. Bhaghamandla recorded a rainfall of 89.40 mm, Kodlipet- 24.30 mm and Sunticoppa 25.10 mm.Thirthahalli taluk of Shimoga district recorded 70.6 mm rainfall while Hosanagar taluk received 42.2 mm. Sagar taluk- 21.4 mm, Bhadravati and Sorab taluks -7.2 mm respectively, Shikaripur taluk -4.6 mm and Shimoga taluk recorded the lowest rainfall of 3.2 mm. Three more out of the ten bridges which were closed for traffic for the past few days were re-opened as Krishna receded due to repite in rains in South Maharashtra, on Monday.The water level in Harangi reservoir stood at 2,856.18 feet as against the capacity of 2,859 feet. Inflow into the reservoir was 10,485 cusecs and outflow 8,025 cusecs, the dam authorities said.
