New Delhi: Rahul Mahajan, late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan’s son, is critical after he was found unconscious at his father’s residence in Delhi on Friday morning.
The three men, who were present at the Mahajan residence on Thursday night, have told the police about all the places they visited in search of drugs.
Police claims three- Karan Ahuja, Rahul Khanna and Trishay Chopra - who surrendered on Friday night, are at Mandir Marg police station.
On the basis of their statement, the police have conducted raids in Mehrauli, Gurgaon and Vasant Vihar in New Delhi.
The police are also trying to establish a chain of events to figure out whether Sahil, the fourth man who attended the party on Thursday night, was a regular drug user or even a drug peddler. They are trying to trace Sahil and arrest him.
The three have also told the police that Sahil got treatment at a private hospital. They say that the fact that they have approached the police should not be seen as 'surrender'.
Thursday night recap
Rahul, 26, and Bibek Maitra, the BJP leader’s secretary, fell ill after a party at the 7 Safdarjung Road bungalow late Thursday night.
They were taken to Apollo Hospital where doctors declared Maitra dead. Police said Rahul, Maitra and three men, who surrendered before police on Friday night, drank champagne and might have consumed drugs. Opiate traces were found in Maitra's pocket.
Rahul’s "condition is critical but stable. Details regarding the cause of his condition are pending investigation and his toxicology reports are awaited," said a medical bulletin issued by Apollo Hospital at 2100 hours IST.
Rahul and Maitra began drinking champagne at 2030 hrs (IST) and the three men joined them at about 2245 hrs (IST), said Additional Deputy Commisisoner of Police (New Delhi District) Manish Aggarwal. Maitra received the guests, two of whom left after an hour and returned after midnight.
Two domestic helps found Rahul and Maitra unconscious early morning and took them to Apollo. The helps "disturbed" the scene of the incident by clearing the champagne bottles, glasses and vomit, said police.
The current status
"The household staff kept the champagne bottles and glasses in a refrigerator," Aggarwal said. "It’s too early to comment whether there was foul play. We are inquiring the cause of death. All angles are being probed. It could be a case of natural or accidental toxication but it is too early to say."
Dr Nirmal Surya, the Mahajan family’s physician, said Rahul did not have symptoms of drug overdose. "Some toxin has affected his respiratory system. We do not know what it is. It is hard to tell now," said Surya.
Rahul has been on anti-depressants for the last three years and increased the dosage two days ago as he was upset about his father's death, said Aggarwal.
"Rahul has been suffering from anxiety and depression since a meningitis attack in 2002 and this had aggravated after his father's death," Surya said.
He ruled out the possibility of any reaction of anti-depressants with liquor, as the quantity of his medicinal intake was very less.
Rahul is on ventilator support and doctors have told his family that there is no cause for any worry, said BJP leader Ravi Shanker Prasad.
Rahul's mother Rekha is with him in the Intensive Care Unit. Rahul’s condition is a "bit serious" but stable and the next 24 hours are critical, said the medical bulletin.
Rahul, accompanied by Maitra, was supposed to visit Assam to immerse his father's ashes in the Brahmaputra.
