VELLORE: The Vellore unit of the Tamil Nadu Health System Project (TNHSP) is taking the lead in introducing quality clinical audit system in government hospitals soon, according to Dr A Kennedy, project coordinator. TNHSP has already formed a quality circle and quality improvement committees in all the government hospitals in the district. This helped in extending quality care to patients, motivating doctors to upgrade treatment methods and address grievances.Since its inception in 2007, TNHSP has been involved in developing the infrastructure of all 10 government hospitals in the district. In order to improve the basic facilities such as buildings, wards, lab equipment, pharmacies, operation theatres, mortuary and power backup, a sum of `13 crore has been spent so far. A `1 crore 12-bedded child ward and a new OPD at Ambur GH, a `30 lakh Accident and Emergency Block at Pernambut GH, a `10 lakh drug storage and a patient waiting facility at Gudiyattam are underway. A Sick Neonatal Intensive care unit was established at Tirupattur GH recently at a cost of `12 lakh. Such facilities used to be available only in medical college hospitals and Tirupattur being a taluk level hospital has become the first one in the district to house such a facility for rural patients. A comprehensive maternity and child health block has also been proposed for Tirupattur at an estimated cost of `4.6 crore, Kennedy said.Since September 2011, all the GHs have become technically advanced. Out-patient registration, clinical details of patients, pharmacies, lab investigations, ward care, nursing facilities and blood banks have been computerised and are open for monitoring by the TNHSP headquarters at Vellore and the state centre at Chennai.
