A meeting convened by District Collector K N Satish to review the execution of prohibitory orders in force in the city on Monday has decided to form squads representing various departments to curb littering in public places.
The meeting decided to form five departmental squads - by the City Corporation, Food Safety, Health, Police and one headed by the Deputy Collector - to oversee the execution. The squads will roam around the city and people found littering in public and dumping garbage in open places will be fined and prosecuted, the Collector said.
When contacted, Corporation Health Officer D Sreekumar said that the local body had already formed a squad for the purpose of checking public littering. ‘’The squad is functioning at night. We have spruced up its activities,’’ he said.
The District Collector said that the squads would be up and moving from Tuesday itself and if needed, arrests would be made. It is in the wake of the spread of epidemics, reportedly owing to garbage-dumping at all points in the city, that the district administration had clamped prohibitory orders on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the City Corporation has got a reprieve in the garbage issue with the High Court coming down heavily on the government for not carrying out the Court order which had asked to give police protection to the Corporation for transporting the machinery needed to complete the construction of a leachate treatment plant at Vilappilsala.
The Vilappilsala panchayat has, however, repeated that it will not allow transportation of any machinery or garbage to the plant at any cost. The panchayat will soon meet to discuss future plans in the wake of the Court’s observation. An all-party delegation from the panchayat is expected to meet the Chief Minister and the Urban Affairs Minister in the coming days to submit a memorandum on the issue.
