TIRUPUR: Painthamil Pari, son of former Rural Industries Minister Pongalur N Palanisamy, was arrested by Avinashipalayam police near Palladam on Wednesday on the charge of usurping a land worth Rs 1.74 crore from one Venkatesh of Tirupur.Former DMK MLA Pongalur A S Mani had already been arrested in this case.According to police, Venkatesh, a resident of Thiru Vi Ka Nagar in Murugamplayam, near Tirupur, owned 15.16 acres at Velampatti village in Avinashipalayam near Palladam. In a complaint, Venkatesh said, that it was decided to sell the land to Venkatesh, son of former Pongalur MLA A S Mani (DMK), for Rs 1.74 crore in  2008 at his house in the presence of Pongalur N Palanisamy. The MLA’s son paid ` 5 laksh as advance.After this, based on an assurance that the remaining amount of `1.69 crore would be paid soon, the land was registered in the name of MLA’s son, the petitioner said in his plaint.  “However they cheated me without paying the balance and took away the land by force. They also threatened me with dire consequences.” he alleged.Following orders from the Superintendent of Police V Balkrishnan, Avinashipalayam police registered cases against A S Mani, his son Venkatesh, former minister Pongalur N Palanisamy and a few others, including Boopathi and Balan alias Somamsundaram from Kupichipalayam, under six different sections. Police arrested A S Mani on August 17 and were looking for the other accused.  Meanwhile, on Wednesday police arrested Painthamil Pari after including him in the case as an accused.   He is the sitting Councillor of Ward 25 of the Coimbatore corporation and also the Chairman of the South Zone.  He was brought to Avinashipalayam police station and later remanded.
