Makhaya Ntini and Shaun Pollock are doubtful starters in the team's first match against Sri Lanka on Monday.

Colombo: South African pace bowlers Makhaya Ntini and Shaun Pollock are doubtful starters in the team's first tri-series match against Sri Lanka on Monday.

Ntini pulled his hamstring in the second Test against Sri Lanka and Pollock is nursing a lower back strain.

Coach Mickey Arthur rated Ntini's chances of playing as "50-50" on Saturday but had expected to Pollock to have recovered sufficiently for the day-night game at Premadasa International Stadium.

But captain Mark Boucher said on Sunday Pollock was now "doubtful" while they will wait till Monday morning before finalising the playing XI.

"We will make a decision on Makhaya before the game but Pollock looks doubtful," Boucher said.

Pollock had also been earmarked for a number five position in the batting order.

If he is forced out then Ashwell Prince is expected to take his place.

Sri Lanka have no fitness concerns after pace bowler Dilhara Fernando recovered from a groin injury.

The series, which also features India, runs from August 14-29 but wet weather in Colombo threatens to disrupt the tournament.
