New Delhi: Consuming poison and hanging seem to be the most preferred methods for committing suicide with the latest statistics showing that two-third of the victims adopted these measures for ending their lives.

The latest figures also revealed that family problems and illness are the major causes for people taking the extreme step and it account for about 50 per cent of suicides.

According to the National Crime Records Bureau, altogether 1,18,112 people committed suicide in 2006 and of them 35.5 per cent chose poison as their option to take their life.

Out of the 56,203 people who chose poison for taking their life, 25,223 consumed insecticide. Hanging came a close second preferred option with 32.8 per cent of the victims adopting this measure while self immolation (8.7 per cent), which came third, was well behind. Fifty-one per cent (6,775 people) of those committed in Andhra Pradesh chose poison while 38.7 per cent (6,087) in West Bengal and 37.9 per cent (5,869) in Maharashtra chose the

same mode for ending life.

A large number of victims who committed suicide by hanging have been also reported from Arunachal Pradesh (109 people), Dadar and Haveli (35), Andaman and Nicobar Islands (107) and Sikkim (112).

Fourty-nine per cent (4,427) of the suicide victims in Kerala chose hanging.

Among the causes of suicides, family problems accounted for 26.1 per cent while illness drove 22.5 per cent to commit suicide.

Failure in love affairs was the reason for 3.4 per cent to take the extreme step, the statistics said, noting that bankruptcy (2.8 per cent) and poverty (2.2 per cent) prompted some others to commit suicide.

The NCRB also said suicides due to bankruptcy and drug addiction has shown an increasing trend in the past three years while such incidents due to unemployment and dowry dispute have shown a declining trend during the same period. However, the number of suicides due to illegitimate pregnancy showed a sharp increase of 56.1 per cent as compared to previous year.

A total of 534 people, including 20 men, have committed suicide citing "illegitimate pregnancy" as the reason for them taking the extreme step.

The NCRB said there were 426 deaths in 2006 at the common pact of mass or family suicide consisting of 223 men and 203 women.
