Union Territory government was considering to introduce post graduate (PG) medical education at the Indira Gandhi Medical College and Research Institute (IGMCRI) by upgrading the centre to a PG institute, Chief minister N Rangasamy said on Wednesday.
Addressing the third batch of MBBS students admitted at the IGMCRI, Rangasamy said the students after completing their MBBS would get the opportunity to do their post graduation at the institute. He said that the best ranked students have got admitted to the college and advised them to study well. He also advised the students to be prepared to serve in rural areas, so that medical facilities could reach everyone.
The IGMCRI was started in 2010-2011, with an intake of 150 students. However, the college had been facing problems with renewal of approval for admission by the Medical Council of India (MCI) each year. This year Government of India had approved a grant of `100 crore for construction and development of the college.
Once the infrastructural facilities were developed, the college would get permanent registration and could be upgraded to a PG institute.
The director of the college, Dr P Jayakuamr, Director of Health and Family Welfare and Director of Medical Education, Dr K V Raman, and Dr Nandita Banerjee, vice principal, attended the function.
