THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The painting exhibition ‘Yathra’ at Alliance Francaise de Trivandrum by Baiju Gopinath gives a fresh feeling to spectators as it beautifully portrays slices of nature. From the snow-clad Himalayan zenith to the abyss of Bay of Bengal, nature has manifold looks in his paintings.  An engineer by profession, Baiju likes to travel a lot. It is these travels that have inspired his canvas with colours. ‘’I had to travel a lot for the past 20 years and have collected lots of information from my journey. The information mixed with my imagination and fantasies are my paintings,” says Baiju. Following yesteryear masters like Francisco Goya and Vincent Van Gogh,  Baiju has learned to draw paintings with  least number of strokes and expressionistic techniques. He also adores Leonardo da Vinci, as he thinks Vinci is the only artist who paints the the subject’s soul.  Baiju had a special interest in painting from his childhood. “I took engineering as my profession and left my interest in painting for almost five years. But the passion for painting remained deep inside as a smoldering fire. After some years, I started painting as it refreshes my brain and soul,” he says.  His paintings are inclined to impressionistic and surrealistic methods of painting as he gains satisfaction from these methods. As he was born and brought up at Kuttanad, the place with lakes and paddy fields, most of his paintings have scenes of Kuttanad and the temples and sacred groves there. He paints in oil, acrylic and water colour.  Baiju is not bothered about the economics of painting. “I paint for my joy and to express my feelings. But since painting is a costly affair, I would sell my paintings occasionally,” he says. He had exhibited his paintings at Guwahati in 2006 and at the Roerich Gallery in the city in 2007 and his paintings were selected for exhibition at Lalitha Kala Academy. Twenty-five paintings which portray the beauty of nature have been lined up in the exhibition, which will conclude on September 30.
