CHENNAI: A dispute between a father and son took a tragic turn after the elder man, who was reportedly roughed up by the youth, succumbed to a heart attack, at Adyar on Monday. A sweeper in the State Bank of India, Ambattur branch, 53-year-old P Elangovan lived with his ‘second wife’. He visited his first wife Selvi, daughter and son Rajesh, a painter and construction labourer, over the weekend. On Monday night, around 9 pm, he arrived at their house on Canal Bank Road in Gandhinagar, Adyar.  “On seeing his father, Rajesh followed him into the house and began to demand money,” Inspector I Rajkumar told Express.Elangovan claimed that he was yet to receive his salary and did not have any money with him. Both men were inebriated and soon a verbal altercation erupted. “Rajesh accused his father of spending all his money on his second family and neglecting his first,” the officer said. In a moment of rage, he put his hand on his father’s chest and shoved him.Elangovan also retaliated and later went out. As he did not return home after two hours, Rajesh went in search of his father and found him sitting in a street corner. He calmed him down and brought him home. On the way, Elangovan complained that he felt uneasy and was unable to walk. Rajesh carried him home and fed him rice and egg. After drinking water, the father again complained of giddiness and collapsed. He was rushed to the hospital, where he was declared “brought dead”.Acting on the basis of a complaint lodged by Selvi, accusing her son of causing her husband’s death, Adyar police arrested Rajesh and charged him under Section 304-A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder). He was produced before the 9th MM Court in Saidapet, which remanded him to judicial custody.
