Bhubaneswar: Orissa Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Wednesday announced cash rewards of Rs 1.5 lakh each to the three hockey players from the state who were part of the team that won the Asian Champions Trophy in China.
Congratulating all the members of the Hockey India for the victory, Patnaik announced the rewards for Ignesh Tirkey, Manjeet Kulu and Roshan Minj, official sources said.
Earlier, Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal announced an award of Rs 25 lakhs to the victorious Indian hockey team for winning the tournament and asked the people concerned to apologise for humiliating the heroes with a petty award of Rs. 25 thousand per player.
The Indian hockey team on Wednesday rejected Hockey India's cash reward for winning the inaugural Asian Champions Trophy, saying the paltry amount of Rs. 25,000 each was not proper recognition of their achievement.
During a felicitation ceremony at the Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Tuesday evening, the players were offered the reward but they outrightly rejected it.
"We were offered Rs. 25,000 each by HI Secretary General Narinder Batra as reward for winning the Asian Champions Trophy but we all refused to take it because it is a very small reward considering our achievement," senior player Gurbaz Singh told PTI.
