BHUBANESWAR: The Congress on Sunday reiterated its demand for a CBI probe into the alleged Pipili gangrape case, reasoning that the Crime Branch (CB) has tried to suppress the truth in its chargesheet. The CB chargesheet said there was no evidence of the girl being raped, but an attempt to murder her was made by the main accused. Addressing a function here to observe the International Women’s Day, function for which was put off on account of ‘Holi’, president of the Odisha Pradesh Mahila Congress (OPMC) Bijaylaxmi Sahu said the State Government, the State Commission for Women and the CB have failed to give justice to the victim in the case. Criticising the CB for filing such a chargesheet in the case, Sahu said only a CBI probe can bring out the truth. Referring to the ‘growing crimes against women in Odisha’, Sahu, a former minister, said women would have to organise themselves to tackle the situation. OPCC president Niranjan Patnaik called upon the women to fight for their rights. Women have always played an important role in nation-building and will continue to do so in future, he said. Criticising the State Government for its failure to give protection to women in the State as is evident from the rising number of crimes against them, Leader of the Opposition Bhupinder Singh said atrocities against women have reached a new high during the last 10 years.
