New Delhi: In only a year and the Facebook Like Button has become almost ubiquitous on the World Wide Web. The simple-looking button with a thumbs-up icon lets users show their appreciation for online content and also lets them share it with their friends on Facebook.

The ease with which websites can integrate the Facebook Like Button has made it an overnight success. Over 50,000 websites included the button within a week of its launch and over 2.5 million till date. According to Facebook, over 10,000 websites are adding the Like Button every day.

To celebrate the first anniversary of the button, Facebook posted an image on its official profile showing how the like Button appears to people across the world in as many as 75 different languages. "Happy 1st birthday, Like button! For a one-year old, the Like button sure has a lot of friends. More than 10,000 sites add the Like button every day. Tell us what the Like button has meant to you," said the Facebook comment on the image.

Ever since its launch the Facebook Like Button has undergone a number of changes to make it more adaptable for websites and users. The success of the Like Button has prompted competitors such as Google to announce a new service called +1. While a number of third-party Twitter buttons were available, Twitter launched its own tweet button in August 2010.

The increasing popularity of the Like Button has also led to demands by some users for an unlike button, with which they can express their disapproval for content they don't like.

The Facebook Like Button was first introduced on April 21, 2010 at Facebook's F8 Developer Conference in San Francisco. With over 500 million users Facebook is the world's largest social networking service.
