On September 8 2006, serial blasts just outside Bada Kabrastan in the communally sensitive town of Malegaon killed 37 and left more than 100 injured.
On October 30, with the arrest of the 25-year-old Noor-ul-hoodha, a SIMI activist, the police claimed to have solved the mystery behind the Malegaon blasts.
Noor-ul-hoodha - according to the information the police had - is said to be the man who planted the bombs.
Hoodha was already in police custody for a bomb hoax case and it was during the course of interrogation that he spilled the beans on the actual conspirator, Shabir Ahmad Massiullah.
Massiullah was arrested by Mumbai Crime branch under Unlawful Activities prevention Act 1967 and is currently in judicial custody till November 16.
He has allegedly undergone arms training in Pakistan and has received skills in handling sophisticated arms and ammunition, and explosives.
On November 4, the ATS managed to arrest another conspirator - Raees Ahmed. Ahmed was produced before the MCOCA court and has been remanded to judicial custody till November 16.
