OIC chief slams anti-cartoonist fatwa

Islamabad: Denouncing the 'fatwa' for killing of a Danish cartoonist for drawing caricatures of Prophet Mohammad, the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) has said that such calls were against the teachings of Islam.

"Threatening the lives of the Danish cartoonists is against the tenents of Islam," says the head of the world's largest Muslim grouping, the OIC. He said fatwas violated the spirit of Islam.

"I think passing 'fatwas' like this is very dangerous and it harms our cause and I don't think this 'fatwa' goes. I'm not a jurist, I'm not a 'faqih' (Islamic jurist), I am not a 'mufti' (Islamic scholar) but as a Muslim, as a conscientious Muslim, I think this 'fatwa' is a wrong 'fatwa' and nobody should really adhere to that because it goes against the essence of Islam, " said OIC head Dr Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu.

The OIC, with a membership of 57 states, is negotiating a proposal to include language on religious defamation in a UN resolution for a new human rights council.

Dozens of people have been killed during protests against the cartoons and subsequent mob violence in various countries including Pakistan, Afghanista, Libya and Nigeria.

Ihsanoglu, however, said economic boycott of countries where the caricatures have been published would be the sovereign decision of Muslim countries. "I cannot decide about the economic boycott, I am not the caliph of the Muslim world," said the head of the 57-nation body.
