BANGALORE: Infosys mentor N R Narayanamurthy has declined Bangalore University (BU) Vice-Chancellor Dr N Prabhu Dev’s offer to chair the Board of Governors of the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering (UVCE).Confirming this, VC Prabhu Dev said, “Yes, it is true. He (Murthy) said he was grateful for our offer, but he would take up the offer from the National Institute of Engineering (NIE), Mysore, which has been pending for the last two years. He said it would be difficult for him to manage two institutions.” National Institute of Engineering is the alma mater of Narayana Murthy. With Murthy pulling out of the picture, former chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission M R Srinivasan has emerged as the top contender for the post. “Srinivasan is an alumnus of UVCE and has been actively involved in several activities pertaining to the college. He has already had discussions with the Union Minister M Veerappa Moily, the Education Minister and others with regard to making UVCE a model institution or an IIT by 2017 (centenary year),” said the V-C. Special Grants for UVCEDr Prabhu Dev also revealed that Moily, who had promised to get Union Government grants worth `100 crore for the development of UVCE, had already written to the Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in this regard.Commenting about plans to merge UVCE with Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU), Prabhu Dev said that decision lies with the Government. “Faculty members are divided over the idea. I don’t see how merging UVCE with other 100-odd colleges will do any good,” he further added.
