Minister of IT Ponnala Lakshmaiah inspected sites at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre, the venue of the Conference of Parties-11 begining on Monday and said that the delegates were happy with the arrangements.

“I interacted with a lot of delegates and nobody complained to me about anything,” he said.

Questioned as to why the beautification works were still ongoing despite knowing a year in advance about the conference, he said, “I have not seen any organization that is perfect. We have had a few delays and will make sure that all of those will be rectified. The works will be completed soon.”

On the alleged misuse of funds allotted for the conference, he commented that there was a monitoring system and that every detail would be evaluated.

The conference restricted the entry only to delegates and experts, while public is being kept away. “This conference is of interest for experts and people from the field. They will be able to enjoy better. Apart from that people can visit the Bio-diversity Park that will be arranged for them,” he said.

While there are over 1250 delegates attending  the conference from across the globe, about 500 are from India.

Ever since the start of CoP, approximately 6,000 people have been attending the conference, while from October 16-19, about 10,000 people are expected to be at the convention. The fact that there are not many scientists from AP is surprising. When asked if experts from other countries were preferred over the ones from India, he said, “We do have a lot of scientists from different organizations based here. There are many experts from India and AP.”

When asked if the T-Issue would have an impact on the conference, he avoided the question and said, “This is an issue of country’s pride. We should not bring politics into this.”
