KOCHI: Despite Health Minister’s plea, Sabarimala pilgrims will not have enough medicos to take care of them this time also. Noticing a huge shortage of medicos to serve at Sabarimala, Health Minister Adoor Prakash had published an advertisement, requesting doctors to serve at Sabarimala during the pilgrim season. However, the shortage will continue this time too as there has been no response to the advertisement so far. More than 600 doctors and 1500 paramedical staff are needed in the pilgim centre. With incidents of pilgrims suffering heart problems on the rise, cardiologists are on high demand there. “There is an acute shortage of doctors. The number of specialist doctors in the department is also very less. We need more specialists, especially physicians, surgeons, orthologists and cardiologists. In north Kerala, most government hospitals have only one specialist. If he is posted to Sabarimala, the hospital would have be closed for at least 10 days”, Director of Health Service Dr P K Jameela said. During the pilgrim season, the government will deploy 11 batches of doctors, each for a seven-day period. With an acute shortage of cardiologists, the Health Department has decided to engage cardiologists from other states. The Government will provide accommodation, food, travelling and daily allowance as per medical rules. The Kerala H had earlier directed the State Government to take measures to maintain the good health of pilgrims. Recently, some pilgrims had died in Sabarimala without getting proper medical aid.
