HYDERABAD: The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) celebrated its 26th Foundation Day at a simple function on its premises here on Monday.Speaking on the occasion, director and Vice- Chancellor of NIMS Dr Dharma Rakshak Ayapati seemed pleased with the hospital progress thus far and assured that within the year, the premises would be improved.“We’ve built a new block which will house trauma care completely. We expect it to be fully functional in three months. The premises are set to be centralised, where we will concentrate cardiac care in one area, cutting down on the need to shift the patients around for various tests, which was one of the common complaints.” He added that several new departments including immunology, genetics, gastroenterology and a super-speciality course in hand surgery and accidental and emergency medicine would be set-up.Asked about a time-frame, he replied, “in medical parlance, everything requires a gestation period. Why do you feel the need to rush me? I am in no hurry. When we are properly staffed and equipped, we will begin services.” On expansion plans, he said, “We have set a high standard and are looking at people who can give a 25- year commitment. They need to also be able to teach. We would also like to initiate doctors into administrative duties earlier than usual so that they don’t flounder whenever asked to take up the work. All these make for a special category of people who are willing to work more for a relatively lesser pay.’’
