MYSORE: With construction works coming to a halt due to the Lorry Owners Association strike, the district administration has decided to introduce a new sand policy from November 25 to meet the demand and supply of sand. The strike entered its 13th day on Tuesday.Announcing this at a press conference on Tuesday, district Minister S A Ramadas said that the district administration has identified a few points to excavate sand at Neelasoge in Cauvery river, T Narsipur and Kuddalapura in Kapila river in Nanjangud taluk and has decided to invite tenders.He said that as per the High Court directions, the government has decided to lift sand from rivers without using machines and will invite tenders in a week.Builders who need sand can pay royalty through demand draft and submit it along with application, approved plan, construction licence and Aadhar card at Mysore City Corporation zonal office or Mysore Urban Development Authority or PWD Executive Engineer office to get the permit that will be issued in an hour. He said that the pre-paid lorries registered with the RTO, painted yellow on the front and with four digit number will supply sand to construction sites. The public can also call sand helpline number and the movement of vehicles will be monitored through Global Positioning System fixed in the trucks to check illegal transportation. Ramadas said that private vehicles will also be allowed to transport sand if they get valid permit from authorised officer. A software has been introduced where the sand quantity supplied to a licence holder is entered and the sand is supplied from 6 am to 6 pm.The department has been asked to book criminal cases against those using children for sand mining activities and the committee comprising DC, PWD officials, Mines and Geology, police and others will monitor the implementation of the new policy.
