Come 2013 the state capital will have another attraction in the form of a state-of-the-art Natural History Museum. The museum will be set up by the State Forests and Wildlife Department on its PTP Nagar campus.
The Department expects to open the museum for the public by 2013-end. The project will be one of the largest of its kind in the state, and would be noted for innovative concepts in museum design, officials said.
The Rs 1-crore museum will have 21 sections with the larger ones on mammals and birds. The theme of the project is an educative wildlife experience and the visitors will be offered an ‘experience’ with the help of latest audio visual facilities, the officials said.
“It will not be just seeing a stuffed animal. One could learn a lot, including their habitats, sounds etc. A vast collection of sound recordings of animals and birds will be a unique feature of the museum,” they said.
An exclusive section on nocturnal wildlife and another on human evolution are among the highlights, besides a photo gallery.
The museum is planned on the two-storeyed building on the PTP Nagar campus which once housed a mini natural history museum.
The valuables under the possession of the Forest Department, especially the crores-worth sandalwood collections seized during raids, will be another attraction of the museum.
