Mysore witnesses one suicide a day
The heritage city witnessed 1,273 suicides in the last three years.

MYSORE: Bangaloreans, who have had enough of the rat race, are often heard saying they would like to settle down in a quiet place like Mysore. But police records in the heritage town, often associated with leisure and culture, throw up disquieting facts. On an average, one person commits suicide everyday in Mysore. The city has witnessed about 1,273 suicides, majority of them by consuming poison and others by hanging, in the last three years.

Shockingly, from January 2009 to October 27 this year, 1,273 people committed suicide in the city, known for its easy paced life. Of these, 354 were men and 919 women. Further, 52 were girls and 29 were boys below 18. In 2009, 461 deaths due to unnatural causes were registered, which dipped slightly to 423 in 2010. This year, till October 27, 389 people ended their lives. These were figures obtained from 16 police stations in Mysore city jurisdiction.

Compared to men, women are more vulnerable, while the number of reported cases of teenagers below 18 committing suicide is on the rise, former DCP P Rajendra Prasad told Express. “People are getting more attached to material objects like gadgets and vehicles instead of building healthy bonds with friends and family members. Parents too need to spend more time with their children,” he said.

Difficulty in coping with the real world pushes the individual towards taking the extreme step. This apart, high academic expectations by parents, financial losses, guilty conscience resulting from strict moral upbringing, incompatibility with spouses or children are some of the most common reasons that drive people towards suicide, he added. The reason most often cited as a cause for suicides is lack of proper channels to share innermost pains and sufferings with like-minded individuals, says psychiatrist Vinod Kumar.
