Born into a family that was greatly influenced by acting, Lucky Ali never thought he would be what he is, now. “I never wanted to be a singer or an actor. But, I always liked singing since I was a kid. When I was at school in Mussorie, I would go atop a mountain and throw my voice across the mountains. I always felt some connection to music,” Ali shares. His husky voice, blended with the unconventional sound techniques, creates all the magic for him. A born performer, Ali's charm lies in his effortless ease with which he wins over people. However, he contradicts the notion when he says, “I do not want to sing because I want to be a performer.
I sing because I enjoy it.” His father, actor Mehmood Ali, has been his greatest inspiration. “He was the one who
initiated me into music. He was a very musical human being himself and that was one of the main reasons for my association with music,” says Ali. Perhaps due to his artistic background, Ali was one of those musicians who experimented with music at a completely different level.
“I ideate with a lot of musicians and every time there is something new that comes up. It is a whole new world which seems to have no boundaries at all,” he explains.
Lucky Ali also believes that for musicians these days making a living on music is quiet a task. “They should always have
some support if they want to do music full-time. This is my advice to the budding musicians. There is a lot of talent out there, but having the monetary aid to fulfill their dream is something very essential,” he explains. One may be surprised, but Lucky Ali treats his music as a serious hobby.
“Music has definitely helped me a lot in gaining an identity. But, I think music should be something which people can move out of and then come back into. A support system is very essential, be it family or a steady
job,” he opines. As for his support system, he credits his family and says, “My whole family is musical. All my kids also sing and have a fondness towards music. Dani, my youngest son also loves music. We keep singing together.” Ask him about his contemporary favourites, he replies, “Anybody who sings well is a favourite.” His latest album, Raasta Man which was launched in July last year, is still creating a buzz, leaving the singer on a new
high. Currently on a nation-wide tour with his band, Ali is covering the the Hard Rock Cafe circuit. His band members include, Mishko M’ba (Bass Guitar), Butto (Flutist), Muthu Kumar (Percussionist), Manoj George (Violinist) and Subash Pradhan (Guitarist/Vocal). Telling us more, he says, “We are doing the Hard Rock circuit and will be touring Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Pune and Delhi to mainly popularise my album, Raasta Man and distribute our
CDs to people.” Often termed as 'the balladeer', the singer is all set to take Hyderabadi music lovers on a blissful musical journey this Friday. “It is always nice to perform here. The audience is very nice and responsive and appreciate all kinds of music. I am looking forward to perform here.” As for his future projects, he says, “For now I am busy with
the tour and want to concentrate on it. There are though, quite some compositions which need to be recorded and processed, which we will take up after the tour.” With a very distinctive music style and sense, this artist has
won many accolades in the music industry. On teh film fronttoo, he has directed quite a few Bollywood movies, and is now drifting towards the alternative.
“I am not planning anything in Bollywood. I am more interested in making an offbeat movie and am looking for an interesting subject.” He is also bitten by the traveling bug. “I want to take a break and go on a around-the-world
vacation, and also to most every place in India,” he says before signingoff.
