Hyderabad: All India Muslim Personal Law Board member Salman Nadvi on Saturday stuck to his stand that there should be an out of court settlement in the Ayodhya Ram Janambhoomi-Babri Masjid case.
The cleric had come out in public with his stand on the issue after a meeting with Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar which drew the ire of the AIMPLB. He had suggested shifting the site of the mosque to settle the dispute.
Following this, a heated argument broke out in the AIMPLB working committee meeting late on Friday with many members demanding action against Naqvi. Sources told CNN-News18 that action is likely to be initiated against the senior executive board member.
A disciplinary committee has been formed to look into the matter. With rift out in the open, the board will most probably announce their decision on Sunday afternoon.
On Saturday, in the general body meeting, the issue was again discussed, where over 500 people participated. Many participants said that Naqvi should be removed from the Board.
While most people remained tight lipped about the developments, some openly expressed their disappointment over the issue.
SQR Ilyas, AIMPLB member, said, “You are talking against the stand of the Board. If you have different option, then you must talk in meeting and not publically. Everyone has condemned what happened. You cannot defame the name of the Board. If no action is taken, image of the board will be affected.”
Miffed after Friday’s meeting, Nadvi too did not attend the second day of the plenary.
Speaking to News18, Nadvi expressed his anger and reiterated his stand on out of court settlement.
“Board says we will wait for Court verdict. But in my opinion, today’s scenario demands other solution as well. We must not fight and resolve issue with hatred. We should work towards unity & harmony and a solution with consensus. I was expressing my views in the meeting, but it looked many members had come pre-planned to target me and create an issue,” he said.
AlMPLB on Friday had claimed that there was no divide and the Board unanimously agreed to its stand on the Babri Masjid dispute.
After meeting of Working Committee members, a statement was issued by Maulana Umrain Mehfooz Rehmani, AIMPLB secretary, saying, "The All India Muslim Personal Law Board reiterates its resolution dated December, 1990 and January, 1993 and once again emphasises the basic level of Shariah that the land dedicated for Masjid cannot be sold, gifted or in any way alienated. If once dedicated, it vests in Allah.”
“All the attempts to negotiate the settlements in past have been infructuous and there is no proposal offering settlement without sacrificing the basic tenet has ever been put before the Board," it added.
Most of the executive member echoed the stand of the board that there can be no compromise on the issue of Babri Masjid.
Kamal Farooqi, member AIMPLB, said, "The Board has taken unanimous decision. There is no change in stand. The Board has not authorised anyone to talk on its behalf.”
Babri Masjid Action Committee Convenor and General Secretary of AIMPLB, Zafaryab Jilani, also dismisses out-of-court formula. “There is no divide about the stand of Board. Everyone has the right express their opinion in the meeting. There can be no compromise as they don’t want any settlement, they want us to surrender which we cannot do. We cannot surrender mosque as it is property of god,” he said.
On Sunday, the Board will announce all the resolutions and its declaration that will be decided in the ongoing three-day plenary in Hyderabad.
The two main agenda discussed in the meetings are the Triple Talaq Bill and the Babri Masjid case.
The plenary will conclude with a massive public meeting at the AIMIM headquarters.
