KOCHI: The Mulavukad Island is all set to have a waste disposal system. The Goshree Island Development Authority (GIDA) is planning to  construct a model solid waste treatment plant in Mulavukad. If found to be effective,  similar plants will be set up in other islands under the jurisdiction of the GIDA. Public sector consultancy organisation KITCO is the consultant of the project. “Unlike the Brahmapuram solid waste treatment plant, it will not be a waste treatment facility out of the city for waste generated in the city. The plant is proposed as a model project and is for the Mulavukad Island alone.  On successful implementation and functioning, such plants can be set up in other islands too,” said the GIDA authorities. The proposed plant will have a capacity  for treating six tonnes of waste per day. The estimated quantity of waste generated in Mulavukad Island is around 6.25 tonnes per day,” said the officials concerned. As per the proposal submitted by KITCO, the plant will also have a facility to generate power out of waste. “There is an option for energy generation. The viability of this proposal will be discussed in the GIDA general council meeting to be held on January 19,” said the GIDA officials. According to the proposal, the plant, which will be constructed at a cost of `5.5 crore, will be designed, constructed, operated and maintained by an agency for a certain period, probably 4 to 5 years. “The plant will also provide employment to at least 40 persons” they said.District collector P I Sheik Pareeth, who is also the chairman of the GIDA, said that final decision in this regard will be taken at the general council meeting to be held on January 19.
