With most of the dengue/malaria cases being that of students in educational institutions and employees of software establishments in and around the city, GHMC Commissioner MT Krishna Babu has requested all the educational institutions and software establishments to cooperate with the Urban Malaria Scheme (UMS) personnel and follow technical guidelines given by them from time to time, and to also take up anti-larval operations in and around their premises.
The Commissioner asserted that many areas are not covered thoroughly and regularly by the operations of Urban Malaria staff of GHMC due to various reasons because of which there is mosquito growth in and around their establishments.
The Commissioner has requested the establishments to pay special attention towards mosquito control measures to avoid mosquito bites so that diseases cannot be transmitted to the students / employees.
Krishna Babu informed that the entomology wing of GHMC has taken up two rounds of special drives for a period of six days last month covering 472 slums which are vulnerable to mosquito menace and diseases. The entomology wing in GHMC has eight vehicle-mounted fogging machines, and 91 portable fogging machines, which operate every day.
340 knapsack sprayers for anti-larval operations, 18 power sprayers for space spray, and 20 stirrup pumps for IRS are being used.
In addition 3 vehicles mounted on hire basis, and 20 new portable new fogging machines, 300 knapsack sprayers and other equipment is being procured and supplied to various circles.
88 Gambusia and 19 Poicilia nurseries are being maintained with 4.2 lakhs and 0.52 lakh fish respectively.
To spread awareness on mosquito breeding GHMC distributed 30,000 pamphlets, stickers, posters prepared and exhibited in various localities. Also, cinema slides were also prepared and exhibited in all the cinema theaters for the same.
GHMC has also deputed 57 workers working for mosquito larval control exclusively in Musi river and it has also proposed to engage another 300 additional workers for mosquito control special measures during this season for a period of 2 months.
The Commissioner said that 72 Kalajathas are being taken up in slums from August to 15th September 2012 which are in progress in identified localities to create awareness regarding mosquito borne diseases and their prevention.
