The intelligence wing of the Commercial Tax Department is planning to grill major defaulters of sales tax prior to the festival season.
It has started listing out shops suspected to be evading taxes. “Since Onam season has begun the business in the shops will flourish and chances of evading the taxes are high. We have information that more traders are involved in the graft. More shops will be checked in the coming days,” an official of the Commercial Tax (intelligence) said.
Shops in the Broadway were much feared by the Commercial Tax Department to conduct checking. “Till now no such checking have been conducted in the Broadway. But since there was authentic information of irregularities we had to take action,” official said.
P C Joseph, Commissioner Commercial Tax Wing said that there was nothing wrong in the raid conducted on Tuesday. “The intelligence wing is permitted to conduct raid without issuing notice to shops. When the raid is conducted by the normal squad we have to give permission,” P C Joseph said.
Shop owners had conducted protest march saying the Commercial Tax Department cannot conduct raid without issuing prior notice.
