KOCHI: The Corporation is all set to implement a comprehensive health and welfare awareness programme, that would benefit all sections of people, including migrant labourers.This was announced by Mayor Tony Chammany at Vathuruthi. The programme is being implemented in cooperation with Kerala State Urban Development Project and an NGO. Chammany said the comprehensive health and welfare awareness programme would cover narcotics, precautions against HIV and general health. He said that as part of the awareness campaign, several programmes would be conducted across the city. All means of communication would be utilised for spreading awareness on the benefit of staying fit and healthy. As part of the campaign, the Mayor said that study classes, counselling, poster campaigns and movie screenings would add to the campaign.KSUDP development officer V R Chitra said the focus of the programme would be mainly colonies and places where migrant labourers are seen in large numbers. Vathuruthi has been selected in the first phase as the place has a large number of migrant labourers, she said, and added that the next programme would be held in Mattanchery. “The basic idea of the programme is to create awareness among the people against the use of narcotics, alcohol and precautions to be taken against HIV,” she said. Chitra said the comprehensive health and welfare awareness progeramme was an ongoing programme. Though one-day programmes are conducted at some places, the volunteers would be taking up the programme to the next level. They would do the follow-up such as visiting the houses and be in regular touch with the people. Vathuruthi division councillor and GCDA chairman N Venugopal and Corporation standing committee chairmen K J Sohan, Ratnamma Raju and Essy Joseph were present on the occasion.
