CHERAI: The anniversary of Misra Bhojan, a historical community meal programme initiated by reformer Sahodaran Ayyappan 94 years ago to eradicate casteism, was inaugurated by writer M K Sanu at Sahodaran Ayyappan Memorial Hall here on Monday.'Misra Bhojan' was considered as one of the greatest revolutionary action when reformist Sahodaran Ayyappan had a grand feast along with the people of other low castes at Thundeede Parambu in 1917.The feast was attended by about 200 people, including the socalled untouchable Pulayas. This was opposed forcibly by conservative sections of society.The annual celebrations commenced when Pallipuram panchayat president Chinnamma Dharman flagged off a lighted torch rally at Thundeetaparambu. The rally concluded at Sahodaran Ayyappan Smarakam.Koru Vaidyar, a contemporary of Sahadaran Ayyappan was remembered on the occasion. A souvenir was released by Sanu.Hundreds of people irrespective of religion and caste took part in the community feast served at Cherai.
