MCD suspends four over east Delhi building collapse
The multi-storeyed building with two illegal floors collapsed in Lalita Park in Laxmi Nagar, killing 70 people.

New Delhi: In the first disciplinary action over the east Delhi house collapse that killed 70 people, Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), on Monday evening suspended four officials, including two engineers, for allegedly allowing illegal floors to come up in the structure.

The action came after the Chief Vigilance Officer of MCD submitted the report of his internal probe into the November 15 mishap to Municipal Commissioner K S Mehra.

"After the CVO report was submitted on Monday, the corporation has placed four officials under immediate suspension for dereliction of their duties. A fifth official, a licensing inspector, was also named but action cannot be taken against him as he is now deceased," Leader of MCD House Subhash Arya told.

The multi-storeyed building with two illegal floors collapsed in Lalita Park in Laxmi Nagar after which MCD faced much criticism over unchecked growth of illegal constructions in the city.

As per the preliminary report, unauthorised construction was carried out in the building during 2004-05. Going by the probe report, one assistant engineer (AE), one junior engineer (JE), two licensing inspectors and one house tax inspector of MCD were found guilty of failing to report that illegal construction was being carried out during that time.

"This is only a preliminary report and the final report is yet to come after which action can be taken against more people," an official said.

The officials who have been suspended are AE Rakesh Kumar, C Singh (JE), house tax Assistant Zonal Inspector (AZI) R K Bansal and licensing inspector Ram Das. Another licensing inspector Vimal Sharma, who would also have faced action, is now deceased, Arya said.

"The Congress which was ruling the MCD at that time needs to do the explaining how the illegal construction took place," the ruling BJP leader said.

He also said necessary action will be taken soon against over 600 unauthorised buildings in east Delhi owners of which have already been sent notices by MCD.
