Pune: The Maratha community on Tuesday took out a huge silent march - 'Maratha Kranti Muk Morcha' at Satara in western Maharashtra.
Lakhs of members of the community, which is pre-dominant in the state politics, from Satara district and adjoining cities such as Pune, Solapur, Sangli and Kolhapur flocked to the city.
Maratha community has been taking out such silent marches across the state.
NCP MP from Satara, Udayanraje Bhosale, who is a direct descendant of King Shivaji, was prominent among those who attended the march. Bhosale has been attending the Maratha
rallies elsewhere too.
Organisers claimed that around 20 lakh people had gathered today.
Demands of the community include reservations, scrapping of SC/ST Atrocities Act and speedy trial in Kopardi case where a Maratha girl was raped and murdered.
Due to the march, traffic on Mumbai-Bangalore Highway came to a standstill for some time.
