Man sets daughter on fire, immolates self

TIRUNELVELI: A man from Subramaniapuram set himself and his daughter on fire near Nanguneri on Wednesday. Velayutham (39) had a quarrel with his wife over money for buying alcohol. Under the influence of alcohol, he doused kerosene on himself and his house. He then set his one-and-a-half-year-old daughter Gobika on fire. The two died on the spot. Neighbours Madasami (35), and his mother Manikathammal (55), who came to rescue him suffered  burns and were admitted to the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital. Nanguneri police have registered a case. Held for wife’s suicideA pizza shop employee was arrested in Chennai on charges of abetment to suicide after his wife hanged herself on July 18.The police said Gokularajan and his wife Vimala (24) were married in 2006. Gokularajan reportedly harassed Vimala for cash and jewels. Things came to a boil, when there was a function at her parents’ house and Gokularajan did not attend it, the police said.When he did not turn up, she became dejected and hanged herself in the kitchen. A former lecturer was recently arrested for allegedly sending an SMS threat referring to the CM and the secretariat. He was identified as Yogeswaran (36) of Acharappakam Village. Upon inquiry, it came to light that Yogeswaran had sent the bomb threat to wreak vengeance against the private college, which had sacked him. He purchased a SIM card from a shop in Villupuram using a fake ID and retailer Kalyanasundaram was arrested for selling the SIM card .Fake passport seizedA man was arrested for possessing a fake passport in Thoothukudi on Wednesday.
