Lucknow: A policeman was killed when an unidentified assailant hurled a bomb in broad-daylight on the main thoroughfare of Allahabad on Monday.
Within 30 minutes of the shootout, police also gunned down the assailant.
According to deputy inspector general of police Akhilesh Mehrotra, the police were on a route checking drive of vehicles on the Civil Lines road.
"When head constable Ashok Kumar Pandey beckoned a speeding motor-cycle to halt, the driver slowed down only to lob a bomb at Pandey who died instantaneously," Mehrotra said.
"The bomb was so powerful that Pandey's head was blown apart."
The pillion rider managed to escape.
