HYDERABAD: A section of the advocate community has alleged malpractices in the elections conducted to the Andhra Pradesh Bar Council across the state on Friday. And, polling did not take place at Vijayawada and Rajahmundry. Though polling was brisk on the High Court premises here, the poll percentage was less than 40 percent. Of the 17,000-odd voters (advocates), fewer than 6,000 cast their vote to elect 25 members to the State Bar Council. Elsewhere in the state, where polling was held at 230 bar associations, the voter turnout was around 50 per cent. In all, there are 68,000-odd voters across the state. Two groups of advocates have fought against one another on the ‘identity card’ issue and forced the polling officer not to go ahead with the polling in Vijayawada. In Rajahmundry, polling did not take place as three of the four bundles of ballot papers were delivered at Rampachodavaram instead of at Rajahmundry.Polling is expected to take place there on January 3 or 4. There were 134 contestants for 25 posts. Counting of votes will start on Jan 19 and will take three or four weeks. Voting pattern was preferential voting. The elected members, at their first meeting, will elect the chairman and vice-chairman of the AP Bar Council, and also a member to the Bar Council of India.
