Silverstone: An entire nation watched with bated breath in anticipation of a victory from the 23 year old, Lewis Hamilton from Hertfordshire in England and as he snatched victory in the dying minutes of Brazilian grand prix, England celebrated their first Formula 1 champion since 1996.
“I was very apprehensive at first, because there was a lot of hostility towards (Lewis) Hamilton and the whole. But I think (Felipe) Massa ran a fantastic race, I'm delighted he won at home here in Brazil, and he won the race, but of course, being British, I am over the moon that the overall title will go to Hamilton,” says school teacher, Theresa Willbye.
A dream fulfilled, Lewis Hamiton was still coming to grips with his incredible feat as he broke down on his fathers shoulder in the Mclaren pit. Not everyday does one get to become the youngest champion and sit at the pinnacle of motor sport.
"Lewis went by and quite simply went from being runner up to being 2008 world champion. You couldn't write a script, you couldn't write the movie. I have never known a finish to any world championship, formula one that has been as exciting as that. I am almost speechless, almost speechless, says five times F1 winner, John Watson.
The championship win was more than just a young man fulfilling the promise he made to his father, it broke barriers for him and British motor sport.
“I think it is a tremendous result. He's come out on top after nearly winning it in his first season. Britain's new world champion and first one for 12 years he's put Britain back at the top and we are very proud of him,” says F1 world champion, Damon Hills.
