Doctors had anticipated that the horse might die by Friday if the leg is not amputated.

The leg of Uttarakhand Police horse Shaktiman, who was allegedly attacked by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) members, has been amputated. Doctors diagnosed that blood supply to injured leg had stopped so it had to be amputated.

Doctors had anticipated that the horse might die by Friday if the leg is not amputated. "Doctors were of view that horse might lose its life by tomorrow morning due to the spread of gangrene, so they decided to amputate the leg urgently," DGP Uttarakhand BS Sidhu said.

The horse - Shaktiman - was bought in 2007 by Uttarakhand Police for approximately Rs 1 lakh. He has taken part in a number of law and order duties including maintaining Mahakumbh of 2010. He also proved to be an asset according to Uttarakhand Police officers as Mahakumbh was one of the largest congregation of human beings and Shaktiman maintained his composure during the event.

Earlier in the day, BJP worker Pradeep Bora was arrested for allegedly assaulting Shaktiman. Bora was a part of the protest march led by BJP Mussoorie MLA Ganesh Joshi, which was agitating against alleged cases of corruption, when the horse was injured.

Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Sadanand Date said the case is still under investigation. Bora was arrested from Haldwani while Joshi has also been booked for attacking the horse.

The incident took place on March 14 during a protest against Uttarakhand Chief Minister Harish Rawat near the state Assembly in Dehradun. The horse Shaktiman, part of the Uttarakhand Mounted Police, fell down during the protest after Bora allegedly tried to pull it down.

Joshi was seen trying to hit the horse with a stick and was also accused of breaking the its leg.
