Left has asked the Govt to explain how and why legal opinion on Quattrocchi's bank accounts was conveyed to London.

New Delhi: Joining the opposition attack, UPA ally CPI(M) has asked the UPA Government to explain how and why legal opinion on Bofors accused Ottavio Quattrocchi's frozen bank accounts was conveyed to the British authorities.

The Left parties have also said that CBI should be allowed to complete the investigations into the matter.

Reacting to a CNN-IBN report that Additional Solicitor General B Dutta had conveyed to the British Crown prosecution authorities that there was no evidence to link the two accounts in London with the Bofors case, the party Polit Bureau demanded that "the government has to explain why and how this has happened".

Maintaining that these accounts were frozen at the request of CBI, it said the investigating agency had also stated that efforts to bring Quattrocchi to court would

continue and that the Interpol red alert notice had not been revoked.

"In such a situation, it is questionable as to why such legal opinion about the bank accounts has been conveyed to the British authorities", the party said.

The pressure is building up on the UPA Government and it’s not just the BJP, which is tightening the noose around it.

The Samajwadi Party, already in a running battle with the government over the phone-tapping issue, has also claimed that the virtual clean chit to Quattrocchi is an example of misuse of authority.

But party leader Amar Singh stopped short of saying that his party would withdraw outside support to the UPA government over this.
