New Delhi: A group of senior lawyers will meet Union Law Minister M Veerapppa Moily in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss the allegations of corruption against Karnataka Chief Justice PD Dinakaran.
The lawyers have already complained to the Chief Justice of India KG Balakrishnan after which the CJI summoned Justice Dinakaran to Delhi on Saturday.
He had sought explanations on the allegations of amassing huge assets disproportionate to his income and favouring some criminals.
Justice Dinakaran is due to be elevated to the Supreme Court, which senior lawyers are against.
Constitutional expert Fali Nariman said a probe should be carried out to see whether the allegations against Justice Dinakaran are true or not.
"The bar does not have the right to appoint judges, nor to veto judges’ appointment. All the power that we have if at all is to warn, to tell the highest judiciary and people who recommend the appointment that look there is some danger in this person and if there is some danger in that person then I believe that an investigations have to be made privately to know whether the allegations are right or not," said Nariman.
A letter written by lawyers of the Madras High Court and signed by four senior advocates of the Supreme Court - Shanti Bhushan, Anil Divan and Ram Jethmalani and Nariman - made serious allegations against Justice Dinakaran and advised that he shouldn’t be promoted to the apex court.
The lawyer’s letter accused Justice Dinakaran of a range of offences: from not paying a bill for his daughter’s wedding to buying large pieces of land in Chennai.
However, Justice Dinakaran has dismissed the charges of corruption. In an interview to the Hindustan Times he said, "I come from a rich agrarian family and the world knows about it. My legal career is an open book and I need not indulge in any wrongdoings."
