Mathura: Thousands of people, including pilgrims and art and culture lovers on Friday participated in the famous 'Lathamaar Holi' in Barsana.

Held every year, young women of Barsana attack with batons men of Nandgaon who try to protect themselves with leather shields. The sport, lasted for over one hour, ended with sunset and chorus from menfolk "Nand Ke Lala Ki Jai".

Earlier, the men from Nandgaon went to Nand Baba temple where they took permission from deity Yashoda for playing Holi in Barsana.

"No Untoward incident has taken place owing to planned arrangement of this Holi. There was unprecedented rush to watch this sport of Holi," District Magistrate Rajesh Kumar said.

Since the DM has ordered for the closure of liquor shops for four days during 'Lathamaar Holi' of Barsana, the agitation by saints to declare Barsana as dry zone was temporarily suspended.
