The station has been put on red alert following an alarm from the Home Ministry and Central Intelligence.

Mysore: The railway station here, which operates 78 trains carrying around 65 thousand passengers a day, has been put on red alert following an alarm from the Home Ministry and Central Intelligence. The Railways’ authorities received the alert from the Railway Board and have stepped up security by deploying more than 100 Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel in the vicinity, frisking passengers, intensive luggage checking and stationing a dog squad around the clock here till Independence Day celebrations on Wednesday. Also, they have deployed more men in express, weekly and bi-weekly trains arriving and departing the Mysore station.

Police Commissioner K L Sudheer visited the Railway Station and held talks with the Divisional Railway Safety Commissioner and other officers, and inspected the measures taken by the authorities. He also stepped up security inside as well as outside the railway station. However, the authorities did not elaborate on the exact nature of the threat. They have directed to step up security in railway station, a prominent tourist destination in the region.

The centuries-old railway station, known for its heritage structure and hygienic atmosphere, is fully covered on close circuit television (CCTV). The RPF and state police have pressed sniffer dogs, disaster management squad and metal detectors, and have told the public to cooperate with the police. The railway officials requested the public to inform the authorities about unclaimed objects and luggage at the railway station.

The police are keeping a vigil on movement of public at the station as well as the parking lots. Security has been beefed up in long distance express trains. South Western Railway Security Commissioner Mohandas said that round the clock security arrangements have been made following the directions from the central intelligence. He also said that this has been done without causing hardship to the passengers and as part of the routine security measures taken in all other prominent stations.
