BANGALORE: The hazardous waste, segregated solid waste and effluents generated from some industries in the state, might very soon be in demand as the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board (KSPCB) is involving all the cement factories in the state to convert them into alternative fuel with technical assistance from a Germanbased company.
KSPCB Chairman A S Sadashivaiah said, "Managing waste is likely to become a very big business in the near future. It is very difficult to segregate and manage toxic waste as they are very polluting. Most of the waste including hazardous waste are completely burnt without realising the fact that harmful gases get released into the atmosphere when they are burnt at 1,200 degrees in the cement kilns. Moreover, most of the segregated waste can be converted into alternative fuel and that will help us to conserve coal. With some technical aid from a Germanbased organisation called GIZ, we are encouraging all the cement factories in the state to use the effluents, hazardous waste and segregated solid waste as additional fuel in their kilns while producing cement."

The process

According to the experts plastic can be completely burnt without causing damage to the environment in cement kilns. Cement industries are using segregated solid waste as alternative fuel, KSPCB chairman said.
