KOZHIKODE: The Government Engineering College premises turned into a battleground on Monday as the SFI activists clashed with the police in connection with the admission of Nirmal Madhavan, a student who has sought protection from SFI attacks, in the college. The violence was sparked off after police blocked the SFI activists who marched to the college.North Assistant Commissioner of Police Radhakrishnan Pillai fired four rounds at the students but none was injured. Police also lathicharged and teargassed them and about 30 SFI activists, including state secretary P Biju, who inaugurated the blockade, were injured. About 35 policemen also sustained injuries in the three-hour-long violence that took place in front of the college.Two parents who were at the college were also injured. K K Praveen, a photo journalist of Mathrubhumi, suffered head injuries. The injured were admitted to the Government Medical College and Beach Hospital in the city. The Nadakkavu police arrested six SFI activists.While the mayhem was taking place, Nirmal Madhavan was inside the campus with police protection. He had been given admission in the engineering college after he had discontinued studies in two other colleges. Principal Z A Zoya said he had not sought police protection for the college. “Police camping at the college was part of the protection being given to Nirmal Madhavan following the High Court order.” Mayor K Premajam and other corporation authorities visited the college after the incident.
