BANGALORE: Union Labour Minister Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday slammed the state government for not utilising funds sanctioned by the Union government for various welfare schemes properly. At a function organised to launch Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojane and issue smart cards for BPL families in the state, Kharge said, though the Bima Yojane was inaugurated by the Centre in 2007, it ensures Rs 30,000 worth free medical treatment to each family and the Centre gives 75 per cent of cost for providing treatments. My head used to bow in shame while saying that not even a single smart card is issued in Karnataka during the periodical review meetings. Kharge stated that though the Centre bears 87.5 per cent of the expenditure of the ESI hospitals in the state, the state has not initiated measures to recruit doctors for vacant posts.Around Rs 1,100 crore that was sanctioned for the construction workers in the state has been lying unused with the Labour Department for four years. Many training institutes can be started to train the children of the people working in unorganised sectors with that money. The state government is yet to utilise the funds that were sanctioned for the street vendors and beedi workers.
