THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Post-graduate doctors and house surgeons of Government Medical Colleges in the state, who launched an indefinite stir on Monday demanding an immediate withdrawal of the order enforcing three years of compulsory rural service, refused to call off their agitation. While tens of thousands of patients who had flocked the Medical College Hospitals had a harrowing time owing to the strike, two round of talks between Health Minister V S Sivakumar and the striking Medicos Joint Council failed to yield fruitful results. An estimated 2,000 junior doctors in the state are on strike. The minister gave an assurance that the order issued on April 16 would be frozen and sought one week’s time to address the demands of the medicos, who however maintained that nothing less than withdrawal of the rural bond service order was agreeable. The medicos also demanded that instead of the compulsory bond, doctors should be given permanent posting from the PSC list. V S Sivakumar said that the stir would be dealt with sternly and the government would ensure that treatment to patients of Medical College Hospitals are not affected. “The Director of Medical Education has been asked to make fool-proof alternate arrangements,” he said. With the medicos in no mood to budge, the issue is likely to worsen the plight of  patients availing the service of Medical College Hospitals in the coming days. The working of casualty and OP wings were hit by the stir on Monday.
