KALPETTA: With schools set to reopen on Wednesday, it is a laborious task for the students who live deep inside the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, to reach school.A girl who was on her way to Sunday school got killed on April 8 this year by a wayward tusker. The animal is still roaming around in the area. However, a meeting of officials and people's representatives, convened by the Education Department the other day, decided to arrange vehicle service for the students.Over 200 human settlements, including 110 settlements within the Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary, across the district, are under threat of wild animals. "All steps are on to address the issue seriously," Deputy Director of Education N I Thangamani said. She told Express that headmasters were deputed to assess the situation in 2,500 tribal settlements. "For better management, monitoring committees will be formed at the panchayat level," she said. The village panchayats also have registered their willingness to allocate funds for travel facilities for students living in jungle villages. But, till the end of monsoon it is uncertainties that are waiting in the clouds for the hapless sons of the jungle, as no driver would be ready to risk their life and vehicle as well.
