BANGALORE: “Nearly 70 per cent of the population in Bangalore is from other states. They all could unite and easily take over the capital, if they wish to and make Kannadigas a minority,” alleged Kannada Development Authority chairman Mukyamantri Chandru. He was speaking at a function to celebrate 56th Kannada Rajyothsava, organised by ‘Vanasri Kannada Ranga Kalavidara Sangha’ at Forest Department on Monday.

Clearing the air that he is not against any language or culture, Chandru said “Even after six decades of our independence we are still in a situation where we make efforts to save and develop Kannada. Despite having a history of about 1,700 years, the language is still thriving for recognition. Out of the 30 districts bordering Karnataka, 19 districts are against Kannada. Some neighbouring states are using this situation to create a political turmoil”.

Stressing there is an urgency to frame plans to facilitate people of other languages to learn Kannada, he said, “Rigid plans must be framed and executed which enables people from states  to learn Kannada. People from other states want everything out of the land, but do not want the language or its culture. It is sad that the government’s order which made it mandatory to give importance to Kannada while installing sign boards is hardly followed”.
