New Delhi: In connection with the February 9 event which was held to mark the death anniversary of 2001 Parliament Attack Convict Afzal Guru at the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the administration on Monday slapped a fine of RS 10,000 on JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar.
Umar Khalid, who is alleged to be the chief organiser of the event, was also rusticated for one semester from the university. While Mujeeb Gattoo was rusticated for two semesters, Anirban Bhattacharya was rusticated till July 15, following which he cannot pursue any course at JNU for next five years.
Other students who met the punishments are Aishwariya, JNUSU general secretary Rama Naga, and Gargi Adhikari.
Anirban Bhattacharya in his Facebook post condemned the "witchhunt" by the university and asserted that the punishment was "unacceptable".
On February 12, Delhi Police had arrested JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar in connection with the event held to mark the death anniversary of Afzal Guru. After Kanhaiya, Umar and Anirban surrendered before Delhi Police on February 23 and were subsequently arrested under sedition charge.
