Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court Justice Prakash Tatia is likely to take over as the next head of the Armed Forces Tribunal, which looks into the defence forces-related service matters.

Justice Tatia's name has been proposed to the government as the next Chairman of the Armed Forces Tribunal to succeed Justice A K Mathur, who retires next week, Defence Ministry officials said in New Delhi.

A law graduate of Jodhpur University, Justice Tatia took oath as Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court on September 11, 2011. Prior to his elevation as a judge in January 2011, Tatia was practising in Rajasthan. He was also elected as the vice president of Rajasthan High Court Advocates Association in Jodhpur.

The Armed Forces Tribunal Act provides for adjudication by the tribunal of disputes and complaints about commission, appointments, enrollment and service conditions in respect of those covered by the three Services Act, and hearing of appeals arising out of orders, findings or sentences of court martial.  The tribunal has original jurisdiction in service matters and appellate jurisdiction in court martial matters.
