Mumbai: Having made box office hits like Dor, Iqbal and Rockford, filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor's next, titled Mod is set to hit the marquee soon. Kukunoor who started his career as an engineer and soon stepped into the world of entertainment feels that while there are many directors in the industry who haven't received their dues, he feels lucky the way his B'wood career is heading.
With Mod's release date inching closer, Kukunoor is busy with the promotional events around his film. IBNLive catches up with the director as he is speeding to the airport to catch a flight. "I have been lucky," he says adding, "To be an engineer and then seeing dreams take off in Bollywood...I should say I have been lucky." An extremely modest man, Kukunoor credits his success formulae to hard work and sincerity to a cause. He points out, "It is all about pouring your heart and soul into something you are passionate about...Very few people in Bollywood know how to control success. Whatever I do, it is with great dedication, and I do not worry about the rest."
It is interesting to note that Kukunoor has once again cast the dimpled Bollywood actress Ayesha Takia to be his leading lady. In fact, Mod is their third project together. While their first association - Dor worked wonders at the box office, their next - 8x10 Tasveer was a dud. Ask him why he appears so fixated with the actress that he went ahead and cast her for the third time in his films, and Kukunoor takes a moment before he replies, "Ayesha belong to the category of actors who can act. There is a difference between that and other commercial actors. It is true she took some time off films after she got married, but that has been her personal choice." Kukunoor is naturally impressed by the actress who has done films like Socha Na Tha, Paathshaala and Wanted, as he says, "Her approach to films has been very different. She is quite focussed on the kind of films she wants to do and doesn't accept each and every one that comes her way..."
In the film, Ayesha runs a small clock repairing shop where she meets a stranger (Rannvijay), who turns up with some problem with his wrist watch every day and hence begins a quirky love story, which takes a dramatic turn. It would be rather interesting to note VJ Rannvijay, better known for his dare-devil attitude on popular reality show Roadies playing a shy introvert. To turn this popular image into one that stands exactly on the opposite side of the spectrum was rather interesting for the filmmaker as well. Kukunoor promises that Rannvijay's character holds a lot of depth in the movie and that he would surprise his loyalists as well. "Rannvijay is known to have this macho image. In this film, we have flipped his image and brought out his sensitive side." The soft-spoken director adds before rushing off to catch his flight, "People would actually be pleasantly surprised with his acting..."
