HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY 2024: India will celebrate its 78th Independence Day on Thursday, August 15. The British colonial forces left Indian territory on this day in 1947, giving the natives the right to form an independent government. The same year on August 14–15, British India was divided into Pakistan and India, which served as a momentous day in the country’s liberation war.
This year, the theme for the 78th Independence Day is “Viksit Bharat”. The name has been decided keeping in mind the government’s vision to transform India into a developed country by 2047.

President’s Address To The Nation
Droupadi Murmu created history when she became the first tribal woman to be appointed to the highest constitutional position in India in July 2022. Last year, on the eve of Independence Day, Murmu, the second female president of India, addressed the nation with a powerful speech.
During her speech, the President discussed the various ways India showed progress. She said that India successfully turned hindrances into opportunities and that the nation witnessed strong GDP growth.
Murmu also discussed developments in the fields of science and education, citing the National Education Policy 2020 and the triumphant launch of the Chandrayaan-3 mission.
The President did not forget to prioritise women’s empowerment and urged everyone to take necessary steps — locally, nationally, and internationally for environmental conservation.
78th Independence Day
Every year, Independence Day is celebrated with flag-hoisting ceremonies across the nation. People sing the national anthem and participate in drills and cultural programmes. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi participates in the flag-raising ceremony at Old Delhi’s Red Fort, a parade featuring the police personnel and the military is organised. Some people fly kites as a symbol of freedom.
The Prime Minister delivers a speech to the nation where he recounts some of India’s milestone accomplishments in the last year. He also highlights future challenges and sets objectives for a better future.
